The only time the ship felt busy was in the buffet at peak times, and when returning to the ship after a short port of call. This venue, inspired by the Liverpool landmark, is home to a Beatles cover band several nights and the ship’s resident rock band on the other evenings. This cozy place can get very busy, so make sure to get there early for optimal seating.
Is The Drink Package On The Norwegian Jewel Worth It?
One popular option is the Alaska Inside Passage cruise, which takes you through the scenic waters of Southeast Alaska. We’ll also share the Norwegian cruise tips that we wish we knew ahead of time, as well as share our day-to-day experiences on shore excursions and aboard the ship. We’ve breathed Alaska’s crisp air, marveled at its towering glaciers, and immersed ourselves in local cultures. We’re not just tourists but passionate explorers who have visited Alaska multiple times, by both land and sea. We’ve poured hours into selecting the best Alaska itinerary and are already planning our next escapade. For kids, our Alaska cruise is like a theme park with the best rides.

Norwegian Jewel14-Day Authentic Alaska
So, if you’ve ever dreamt of seeing the northern lights while sailing through the pristine waters of Alaska, read on to discover the incredible opportunities that await. Next on our list was to finally spend some time in the thermal suite beyond just taking photos and videos of it. We spent just under 1.5 hours here, alternating between the heated loungers and the experiences. My personal favorite is the salt room, while Don enjoys the sauna.
Do You Need a Passport for Alaska Cruise?
This cabin looked in really good shape still considering the ship is a few years old now. It had modern décor and was a pretty standard size and layout when it comes to balcony cabins. Feeling a bit tired from all our recent travels, we didn’t do much in Seattle this time around.

But what truly simplified our transition was Seattle’s Port Valet Service. This service lets you check in and send your luggage directly from the ship to your flight, making the process as seamless as possible. After this nature-filled morning, we explored downtown Ketchikan.
One of the nice things about Norwegian Encore, when compared to our recent Princess cruise, was the abundance of spaces to glacier view. Following this set, we ended our evening in the Sugarcane Mojito Bar with some drinks and live Latin music. Tomorrow were were cruising through Glacier Bay early in the morning, and we certainly did not want to miss it.
Again, we highly recommend making reservations pre-cruise for these venues as popular restaurants and dining times fill up quickly. For those wanting to truly experience Alaska, its offers up to 14 day sailings with plenty of port visits and scenic cruising. This ship has a variety of sailings, from a couple of different departure points, in addition to land-based tours for those wanting a more in-depth Alaskan experience. This section of our Alaska cruise review provides a detailed day-by-day itinerary breakdown.
Aerial view of Glacier Bay
A comprehensive Alaska Denali program in only six days, complete with riverboat and railroad experiences as well as a preview of Denali’s incredible wilderness. Embarking on a 10-day Alaskan cruise also presents an opportunity to witness the dynamic range of wildlife in the region. From spotting humpback whales breaching the oceans surface to observing brown bears catching salmon in pristine rivers, the possibilities for wildlife encounters are endless. Additionally, the chance to engage with indigenous cultures and learn about their rich heritage adds a fascinating cultural aspect to this Alaskan adventure.
I spent $20 at NCL's Ice Bar, and it was the best-kept secret on Epic
For Glacier Bay National Park, the ship onboarded National Park Rangers to give narration about the area. They would point out any wildlife and information about how the area has changed over the years. (I will say, the prices do tend to be slightly higher if you book through the cruise line, than if you book through a third party).
That’s probably why it was always quite busy during our sailing. On our Norwegian Encore cruise, we had a 7-night dining package, so we were able to sample most of the specialty restaurants. Located on Deck 7, this 24-hour pub serves a changing menu depending on the time of day. This large venue features a bar, along with a mix of high tops and restaurant-style seats.
In summary, Sitka is a treasure trove of experiences, from its historical landmarks to culinary delights and shopping options. Despite the extra time needed for tendering, the day was rich in Alaskan culture and natural beauty. While our Norwegian Encore cruise ship balcony was smaller than some other balconies in the industry, we highly recommend a balcony cabin especially in Alaska. The king-sized bed was located on the aft wall facing forward adjacent to the balcony, which is our preferred cabin orientation. This bed provided plenty of comfort after our long days and nights exploring all that Alaska and Norwegian Encore have to offer. The bigger the table, the better, as cruisers are entitled to 4 selections each when redeeming a specialty dining credit.
If you’re considering an Alaska cruise, we wholeheartedly recommend Norwegian Cruise Line for its mid-sized ships and affordable pricing. And if you’re short on time, our guide to picking the perfect 7-day itinerary will help you make the most of your trip. Embarking on a 10-day Alaska Inside Passage cruise aboard the Norwegian Sun was an adventure we’ll never forget. From the awe-inspiring landscapes of Juneau and Skagway to the cultural richness of Sitka and Ketchikan, each port of call offered something unique. Icy Strait Point was a standout, offering a less crowded experience and incredible whale-watching opportunities. Our 10-day Alaska cruise aboard the Norwegian Sun was a memorable experience with a few hiccups.
Personally, we weren’t really that impressed with the Norwegian Cruise Line food. While there definitely was a nice variety of options, it just seemed like everything was mass-produced and lacked flavor. There is also the option to upgrade to the Premium Plus Drink Package which includes many higher-end liquors and wines for an additional $29 per day. So doing some light math, let’s say you start drinking in the early afternoon and have one drink per hour. Then you go to dinner and switch to wine, let’s say you have 2 glasses ($9 + $15).
