Tracking a specific cruise ship will give you additional details like the ship's current location, recent track, speed, course, next port destination, estimated time of arrival (ETA) and more. The Automatic Identification System, or AIS, is a system used by ships and other vessels to identify each other and transmit their locations. This information can be used to track the progress of a cruise ship as it travels from port to port. The data transmitted by AIS includes the vessel’s name, course, speed, destination, ship type, and any safety-related messages. It also provides an indication of the vessel’s size, type, cargo, and maneuverability.

On the map, you'll see icons that represent ships currently en route and ships that are docked at ports. When you click on each icon, you can view more details about the ship, including its speed, how long it spent traveling, itinerary information and weather. Cruise ship tracking is a technology that allows cruise lines to monitor their vessels in real time.

Repositioning cruise Wikipedia

cruise ship repositioning

Solo travelers can have a difficult time finding great deals on repositioning since cruises tend to impose a single supplement fee. Therefore repositioning cruises, or cruising in general, can often become cost prohibitive for solo travelers. The average transatlantic repositioning cruise takes about two weeks, while transpacific cruises and other routes can take three weeks or even longer. The longest repositioning cruise we’ve taken was 30 days, from Italy to South Africa. It’s a great ship and this particular sailing has a decent itinerary including Bermuda, Ireland, France, and England. But keep in mind that the least expensive repositioning cruises can sometimes be cheap for a reason, either a poor itinerary or an undesirable ship.

The Best Repositioning Cruises in 2024

From elegant accommodations with plush furnishings to world-class dining options featuring gourmet cuisine, Azamara ensures every aspect of the journey exceeds expectations. Additionally, passengers can indulge in immersive cultural experiences, curated onboard entertainment, and rejuvenating spa treatments, making each moment onboard a celebration of luxury and relaxation. Set sail with Windstar Cruises on repositioning cruises in 2024 & 2025 to explore an array of captivating destinations spanning continents and cultures. From the tranquil waters of the Caribbean to the majestic fjords of Scandinavia, each itinerary is meticulously crafted to showcase the best of each region. Immerse yourself in the vibrant cultures of Europe, Asia, and beyond, as you journey to iconic ports of call and hidden gems off the beaten path.

What are the benefits of a repositioning cruise?

There are a few months during the year when repositioning cruises are in much greater abundance, whereas at other times of the year repositioning cruises are nonexistent. There’s so much to do on repositioning cruises, besides all the fun ports. Many of these large ships are like mini-cities, full of recreation, bars, theatres, libraries, pools, activity centers, gyms, spas, shops, and more. These grand voyages tend to bring out the romanticism of yesteryear, traveling by sea. There’s something so peaceful and relaxing about being in the middle of the ocean. When a brand new ship is repositioned like this, it doesn’t necessarily follow the seasonal shifts that other repositioning cruises do.

Related Itineraries

A repositioning cruise is an itinerary that involves a cruise ship moving from one region to another. These voyages often occur seasonally and exist to provide guests with a cruise experience that is typically different from a more traditional cruise holiday. Arguably, the most enticing aspect of repositioning cruises lies in the diversity of their itineraries. Imagine setting sail from the bustling, culture-rich port of Miami, only to disembark amidst the ancient architecture and rich historical aura of Rome. Or picture starting your journey amid the majestic, rugged beauty of Alaska and concluding in the technologically advanced, cosmopolitan cityscape of Tokyo.

Many popular repositioning cruise routes can perhaps be traced back to the golden days of ocean liners. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, ocean liners were the primary means used to travel long distances between continents. Transatlantic crossings were a common route during that period, which remains the most popular repositioning cruise itinerary today. One final reason that repositioning cruise routes are created is when cruise ships need to be moved for major refurbishments.

Common Misconceptions of Repositioning Cruises

When ships reposition between ports in the U.S. and Canada, the one-off one-way itineraries might not be labeled anything special beyond Caribbean or Pacific Coast cruises. It depends on the itinerary as destination and length, but a one-way Transatlantic could cost as little as USD 60 Per Person per day (double occupancy, fares inclusive of taxes and fees). You might pay 50% or even less for a one-way reposition cruise than the normal price for a round-trip with multiple ports of call.

This is because the one-way, sea day-heavy itineraries are less desirable to the majority of cruisers, and they take place during slower travel seasons. The only time you don't need a passport to cruise is if you're booked on a closed-loop sailing — a voyage that departs from and returns to the same port within the U.S. Since repositioning cruises don't leave from and return to the same port, the exception won't apply, and you'll need a passport in order to board the ship. Because repositioning cruises are not all tied to the same destination, this only widens your options in terms of geography. To envision where these will sail and when, you need to know a destination's cruise season. Therefore, it’s a style of cruising that is perfectly suited to those who love being out in the open water.

What time of year are the cheapest Repositioning Cruises?

You might sail out of Florida and arrive in Barcelona or Southampton, England, allowing you to explore two continents on one vacation. Or, you might simply sail from Boston to Florida or from San Diego to Vancouver, British Columbia. At The Cruise Line, we offer a wide variety of repositioning cruises with many lines, including Silversea, Oceania Cruises, Seabourn and more. They're offered the unique chance to sail a new, offbeat route -- and often at a lower-than-average price.

Repositioning cruise destinations

There are inevitably a number of consecutive sea days during repositioning cruises, which may not give such cruises as broad of an appeal as a packed Caribbean cruise that stops at a different island each day. Although we love repositioning cruises, they’re certainly not for everyone. Therefore, with a lack of demand, prices for repositioning cruises tend to drop to very attractive rates.

While Royal Caribbean will offer lots of activities each day of your cruise, inevitably you will find down time to "do your own thing" during the sailing. It should be noted that not all ship movements necessarily include a repositioning cruise, but it is commonly offered as a way to generate revenue for a necessary operation. Repositioning sailings that do not involve an ocean crossing are usually shorter, but they are less frequently offered. Repositioning cruises can take you places you probably never considered going, like Takoradi, Ghana or Russia's wild Kamchatka Peninsula. The Norwegian Breakaway takes cruisers on a 14-night journey from Copenhagen to New York in October, with stops in Iceland and the Azores (from $900).

Cruising is not just about visiting tropical islands or coastal cities; it can also be an exploration of the sea's tranquility during repositioning cruises. These journeys, often shrouded in mystery, offer a distinctive perspective on ocean travel, packing the charm of traditional cruising with the serenity of a transoceanic voyage. So, prepare to cast off your preconceptions and embark on an enlightening journey as we redefine what it means to cruise. Many repositioning cruises involve an ocean crossing, where the ship moves from one region to another. This means many days at sea, and ample opportunity to see and experience everything onboard. Moreover, it is a great way to get to know the crew members since your sailing is more than just a few days.

In addition, they present a rare opportunity for travellers to traverse expansive oceans or seas, crossing multiple regions, and visiting ports that are often off the beaten track. One of the best things about a repositioning cruise is all the extra sea days you have, so be certain to enjoy all the onboard activities and entertainment. The best reason to book a repositioning cruise is to not only be on a certain ship, but enjoy extra sea days and even unique ports of call.

With attentive service and a commitment to exceeding guest expectations, Windstar Cruises sets the standard for luxury repositioning cruises. Sail from one incredible destination to another on one of our luxury repositioning cruises. Spend relaxed days on board one of our luxury cruise ships in the award-winning spa, dipping in the sparkling pool, and tasting world-class culinary creations inspired by global destinations. With plenty of days at sea and stops in some of the most coveted ports in the world, these repositioning cruises promise adventure both on and off the ship. Seabourn Cruise Line, renowned for its luxury and personalized service, presents a captivating array of repositioning cruises in 2024 & 2025. These voyages offer travelers a unique opportunity to traverse the globe in style, experiencing unparalleled comfort and sophistication amidst breathtaking seascapes.

Meanwhile, repositioning cruises are very uncommon January-February and are exceptionally rare from June-August. As the cruise line transfers a ship to the next region, they are repositioning the cruise ship from one area to another. Repositioning cruises are also known as “repo cruises” and are occasionally referred to as “relocation cruises.” It’s all the same thing.

Bring your own Pirate Night Costume & Gear.

Held on one evening of your voyage on many Disney Cruise Line itineraries, this swashbuckling soiree is a ton of fun. Cabanas buffet reopens with a full special Pirate Night buffet during Club Pirate. We were still stuffed from dinner, but others were indulging on the late night meal. I loved looking at the pirate themed watermelon carvings and other pirate decor in the buffet line.

The character greetings were offered twice throughout the evening to allow everyone time to meet the characters in their pirate attire. Other character greetings include pirate favorites such as Peter Pan, Captain Hook & Mr. Smee, and Captain Jack Sparrow. Be sure to check the DCL Navigator app for character greeting times, as not all characters listed are available on all cruises. Before our cruise, we received word from the cruise line that we would be enjoying Pirate Night. On our first cruise, I was able to scrounge up an old Pirate Mickey T-Shirt I had. For other cruises, I stepped it up and found a white and blue striped shirt to go with some jean capris for a decent Mr. Smee outfit.

Planning Your Evening

So the day you are able to book one of the Pirates League packages is the night you will have your Pirate Night. If you are booked on one of these itineraries, make sure to check first before planning for pirate festivities. There are several good locations to view the fireworks, so I thought I'd list some of my favorites. This event is weather permitting but Disney does their best to make sure that it happens whether it’s re-positioning the ship to a better location or rescheduling it for a different night. While the the onboard display isn’t quite as awe-inspiring as the ones at the Disney parks, the Buccaneer Blast is still one of the most anticipated activities on the ship.

You’ll especially want to be strategic about where you decide to watch the fireworks, whether Buccaneer Blast or Pirate’s Rockin’ Parlay Party. No matter which ship you’re on, the fireworks are launched from the starboard side of the ship (the right side if you’re facing toward the bow, or front, of the ship). Add in accessories like a pirate hat and plushie shoulder parrot, wait until you get onboard and arm yourself with a toy sword from one of the ship’s shops, or pack a pirate Halloween costume. Costumes aren’t required for Pirate Night on a Disney Cruise. Having said that, the vast majority of cruisers do dress up for the occasion, even the adults.

Costume Comfort

Take your pirate night outfit to the next level by incorporating your favorite Disney characters into your pirate theme. Dress up as Captain Jack Sparrow, Captain Hook, or even Peter Pan in pirate attire. This fun twist will bring a touch of Disney magic to your pirate night and make your experience on the Disney cruise all the more memorable. Another exclusive offering for Disney Cruise Line is the ability to greet Disney characters in pirate attire. We had an absolute blast meeting our beloved characters in their pirate costumes.

Special Pirate Character Meet And Greets

All of these characters will also be dressed in their own special pirate-themed outfits. The villainous Captain Hook and his faithful first mate Mr. Smee have also been known to sail these seas. No matter which Disney cruise ship you’re sailing on, what ports you’re stopping at or when you’re traveling, cruising with Disney can be downright magical. Whether it’s your first time sailing the high seas with Disney or you’re a crew of returning sailors, for many, one of the highlights of a Disney Cruise is Pirate Night.

Remember, the key is to have fun and express your creativity! Whether you create your own costume or purchase pirate-themed clothing, the options are endless. Just make sure you’re comfortable enough to enjoy all the exciting activities planned for Pirate Night. No pirate outfit is complete without some jewelry to add a touch of glimmer and shine.

This was my biggest concern about Disney Cruise Pirate Night on our first Disney Cruise. I am not really a costume person, but didn’t know if I would feel left out without one. I opted to wear regular clothes our first Pirate Night, and although it was fine I did wish I had done a little something pirate inspired.

Not only does it serve as a reminder of a pirate’s daring adventures, but it also adds an element of danger. With one eye covered, you’ll feel like a true buccaneer, always on the lookout for hidden treasures. Whether you opt for a traditional black patch or a more decorative design, your eye patch will surely make you stand out among the sea of pirates on the Disney cruise. The Pirate Party extends to a fabulous pirate-themed dinner at each main dining restaurant. There was also a bit of entertainment included with dinner, including some visiting pirates and a limbo! Disney Cruise Line is completely unique in the cruise line industry in the way that they host pirate-themed nights onboard many of their ships.

It really depends on if you are just wanting to get your makeup done or if you want to go all-out. Basically, the more expensive packages include a full-on pirate costume (sorry adults, the costume packages are only available for kids). Check the DCL app for the listed time, as it will depend on your seating time for dinner. You can also find out by looking online (once you’ve checked in) to see when The Pirates League makeovers are available.

The evening is a crescendo of pirate festivities, each moment building up to the grand fireworks display. Depending on when you have dinner, you might see the Pirates of the Caribbean stage show (on the pool deck) before dinner or after. So, as much as I love a meal with a theme, this is the one Pirate Night event I’d probably skip on my next Disney Cruise and do one of the adults-only eateries like Palo, Remy or Enchanté instead. Trying to do a lot with just a little bit of money and space? Consider going for a casual, DisneyBounding-style look with affordable everyday pieces you can possibly wear again. This is the route my group took during our first Disney cruise, and we’re glad we did.

These special-themed cruises are only available on select sail dates in September and October each year.

For those less ambitious, mask-making activities invite guests to participate once onboard. Gift shops are only open on board when the ship is at sea, so I highly recommend purchasing any special merch you want at the earliest possible time. They won’t be receiving a new shipment of merchandise during your cruise, so if something sells out while you’re on board, you likely won’t be able to get it at a later time. The moral of the story is if you want that special Halloween mug, just buy it. Ready to set sail on the high seas during the spookiest time of the year? And cruising during a Halloween on the High Seas cruise has been one of our all-time favorite vacations to date.

Mark your calendars for June 26, 2023, and secure your spot on these extraordinary cruises where Disney magic meets holiday enchantment. If you prefer to depart from Galveston, the Disney Magic is ready to whisk you away on cheerful cruises ranging from four to six nights. Celebrate the holiday season together as you visit tropical ports of call throughout the Caribbean. Get ready to embark on a magical journey with Disney Cruise Line in the fall and winter of 2024.

Below Sailings offer Halloween Cruise Deals

Halloween on the High Seas means all sorts of spirited special events, along with the many typical activities that are available on a regular Disney cruise. Cruising with Disney during spooky season can even mean double the fun, as many of these spine-tingling sailings also include the ever-popular Pirate Night in their itinerary. A top choice for celebrating Halloween on the high seas, Carnival's Frightfully Fun Halloween activities span the entire month of October.

Disney characters do meet-and-greets throughout your cruise and could even change outfits each time they appear. While it is possible to see your favorites in their bone-chilling best at other points during the cruise, the main time characters will wear their Halloween costumes is on the night of Mickey’s Mouse-querade. You might be wondering if Halloween on the High Seas is more expensive than a typical Disney cruise.

Depending on the duration, you’ll have the chance to explore The Bahamas or venture to fan-favorite destinations throughout The Bahamas and the Caribbean. While you can enjoy all of the traditional Disney Cruise Line activities during these sailings, there’s even more to do during Halloween on the High Seas! Daily activities include Halloween crafts, Halloween movie presentations, meet and greets with characters dressed up in Halloween costumes, and more. With sailings departing in September and October, many of Disney’s Halloween on the High Seas cruises go to the Caribbean, where spooky season sadly coincides with hurricane season, in search of warmer weather. Fortunately, as long as you can get past the overall uncertainty that comes with cruising during this occasionally treacherous time, you can sail away with quite a savings.

Everyone will recognize your Halloween spirit when you arrive with a Halloween-themed carry-on bag. It’s easy to find carry-on luggage with a monster, princess, or movie theme. With a few craft supplies, you can easily add a few ghosts or spiders to your bag for some creepy crawly fun. When booking your Halloween on the High Seas cruise, be sure to consider your preferred port of departure, itinerary, and cabin type. Prices can vary depending on these factors, so do your research and compare options to find the best fit for your budget and preferences.

Patch has planned plenty of Halloween activities and fun happening during your cruise. Worldwide, Holland America stages Halloween-ready excursions, including Mysteries of Palermo, Italian Countryside & Catacombs, The Ghosts of Old Quebec and the Ghosts & Goodtime Girls (Skagway, Alaska). Many of these tours are offered throughout the cruises' regional seasons, not just on Halloween cruises. Kurt is a former Disneyland Cast Member and seasoned explorer and is your trusted guide to the world of theme park travel. If he isn’t found trying the newest treats in Disneyland, Kurt enjoys relaxing at home with his dog Sam and playing video games with friends in his free time. It is tradition to decorate your stateroom door for any Disney Cruise.

It doesn’t sound like Halloween on the High Seas has any of this, either. We’re also keeping our excitement and expectations in check, as we previously did one of DCL’s Christmas cruises, and it was a bit underwhelming. (See our Very Merrytime Christmas Cruise Review.) Perhaps that was simply a matter of unrealistic expectations–something we probably don’t have to as great of a degree when it comes to Halloween.

If your costume is particularly creative, funny or unique, don't be surprised if fellow passengers request photos with you or of you. It's up to you whether you'd like to allow them to take pictures; either way, consider it a compliment. There’s so much going on during your Halloween Disney cruise that it can be tricky to keep it all straight.

For a more relaxed evening, why not settle in for a Halloween movie? The ship’s movie theater shows a variety of Disney Halloween films throughout the cruise including family-friendly classics to more frightening options for adults. For example, a 7-night Western Caribbean cruise on the Disney Fantasy departing on August 31st, 2024, starts at $1,638 per person for a standard oceanview stateroom. But, the same itinerary departing on October 28th, 2024, for the Halloween on the High Seas sailing starts at $1,701 per person for a standard inside stateroom.

10 Best Alaska Cruises to Take This Summer

We can think of nothing better than a voyage on one of the two Princess Cruises ships that sail out of the city, the 3,660-passenger Discovery Princess and 3,560-passenger Royal Princess. Yes, the 3,998-passenger Norwegian Encore is a cruise ship that generally caters to the masses, not the luxury crowd. However, it has its own "ship-within-a-ship" luxury zone that offers a much more swanky experience for those willing to pay. While the kids enjoy Discovery Princess' spacious children's and teens' clubs, the adults might linger over a craft cocktail or enjoy a massage in the onboard spa. The family can come together for meals in a variety of casual and fine dining restaurants, and enjoy original production shows as the ship sails between ports.

This day of cruising offers an array of scenic highlights as our small ship meanders the narrow channel of the Tracy Arm Fjord. Throughout the 25-mile journey, the waterway averages only about a mile wide, framed by steep vertical cliffs stretching more than 3,000 feet high. Pockets of valleys reveal views of larger, snow-capped peaks featuring mountainsides adorned with ancient forest and swaths of sparkling glaciers. Hundreds of waterfalls cascade down the cliffs and tumble into the water. The miraculous journey is further heightened as the ship arrives at the faces of the stunning twin Sawyer Glaciers that once combined to carve out this incredible waterway.

The new itinerary is one reason we give Westerdam the edge among ships when rating the best Alaska cruises out of Seattle for seniors. The best Alaska cruises range from off-the-beaten-path voyages on vessels carrying fewer than 100 passengers to weeklong jaunts through the Inside Passage aboard megaships that hold thousands. With Princess, you won’t just explore Alaska’s landscapes, you’ll live amidst them in our custom-built wilderness lodges. Located riverside next to some of the most renowned national parks, these warm and welcoming lodges are the perfect spot to bask in Alaska’s best attractions. As a part of your Alaska cruisetour, explore and unwind with comforting amenities and breathtaking scenery.

Ideal for Adventurers

Along a river on the edge of town, view the bears that regularly feed on salmon. That'll depend on your personal interests and travel style because there are cruises from Seattle that appeal to everyone, including family travelers, budget travelers and retirees. Westerdam is also a slightly smaller ship than Eurodam, and as a result, its demographics on any given sailing are more likely to skew toward a retired crowd.

Upcoming Cruises

Older kids will love the rock climbing walls, video game stations, sports courts, go-karts and laser tag on Royal Caribbean and NCL ships. Generally, these one-way sailings travel from Seward or Whittier (the cruise ports closest to Anchorage) to Vancouver (or vice versa). Most itineraries are seven nights, but you'll find a handful that are longer. One nice thing about the Inside Passage is how calm the water is because you're sailing between land masses. If you worry about seasickness, an Inside Passage trip is the best Alaska cruise itinerary versus a sailing where your ship transits rougher, open waters. If you want to see landlocked areas, such as Denali National Park, you can tack a cruise line-operated tour onto the beginning or end of your sailing for a seamless land and sea vacation.

Travel back in time and pan for gold like a prospector during the Gold Rush. Snuggle sled dog puppies in the ship's Piazza, or see the Northern Lights in the planetarium. At the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge, explore our treehouse and enjoy unmatched views of Denali. Dive deeper into what makes the Great Land special on your cruise to Alaska. Alaska's seafood is famous, and we bring the best to you with locally inspired dishes from the state’s best eateries. With Cook My Catch excursions, catch your own salmon or halibut with the help of a local expert, and in the evening our talented chefs will prepare your haul for your dinner — a Princess exclusive.

Best cruise lines for extended trips to Alaska

Back on board, Gabree recommends The Chef’s Table for a truly memorable meal — and I, too, can attest to this. While on board a Caribbean sailing with the cruise line, I had the chance to indulge in this chef- and sommelier-led multi-course food and wine pairing adventure. Four years later, I still find myself dreaming of the delicious circular-shaped dessert known as “The World” — the perfect combo of peanut butter ganache, chocolate mousse, and salted caramel gelato).

The park sprawls majestically over 3.3 million acres of dynamic topography. Thousands of glaciers descend toward the bay, which is surrounded by the Fairweather Mountain Range, known to collect more than 200 feet of snow annually. Before boarding, enjoy a guided exploration of Juneau which concludes at the ship. Both ships are almost identical, but we give Discovery Princess the edge only because it's newer than Royal Princess. Passengers staying in solo cabins get exclusive access to the Studio Lounge (using their keycards), meaning a maximum of 82 people will share the space.

Denali National Park takes you out of the city altogether, into a wilderness full of spruce forests and snow-capped mountain peaks. Enjoy an insider’s guide to discovering the best family cruises for your next vacation onboard Brilliance of the Seas. If you're interested in the Midnight Sun, the longest day of the year is June 21, when you can experience close to 20 or more hours of sunlight in some parts of the state. If you're more interested in the Alaska Northern Lights, the earlier sunset in later summer will allow more contrast and better views of this natural wonder.

If you prefer to stay grounded, you can find informative trolley tours of ports like Skagway. If you want to cruise Alaska but also see some of the interior and enjoy a stay in a lodge or hotel, go for a cruisetour package from either Holland America or Princess Cruises. Both have fantastic itineraries that take passengers not only to the Inside Passage, but also Anchorage, Denali National Park, the Yukon, Kenai Peninsula, Talkeetna and Fairbanks.

With a Frozen-themed deck party and tons of activities and venues onboard, the kids and teenagers are sure to stay entertained. The former has a popular Gold Rush tour from Skagway into the Canadian Yukon as well as Fairbanks, Denali, and Anchorage land tour options. With less than 1,000 passengers (adults only), small does not translate to lacking of amenities. Spas, distinctive design elements, and even bathrooms with heated floors are included on a Viking cruise. Departures are typically out of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Seattle, Washington.

Norwegian Encore Alaska Cruise Review

alaskan cruise norwegian

The only time the ship felt busy was in the buffet at peak times, and when returning to the ship after a short port of call. This venue, inspired by the Liverpool landmark, is home to a Beatles cover band several nights and the ship’s resident rock band on the other evenings. This cozy place can get very busy, so make sure to get there early for optimal seating.

Is The Drink Package On The Norwegian Jewel Worth It?

One popular option is the Alaska Inside Passage cruise, which takes you through the scenic waters of Southeast Alaska. We’ll also share the Norwegian cruise tips that we wish we knew ahead of time, as well as share our day-to-day experiences on shore excursions and aboard the ship. We’ve breathed Alaska’s crisp air, marveled at its towering glaciers, and immersed ourselves in local cultures. We’re not just tourists but passionate explorers who have visited Alaska multiple times, by both land and sea. We’ve poured hours into selecting the best Alaska itinerary and are already planning our next escapade. For kids, our Alaska cruise is like a theme park with the best rides.

Norwegian Jewel14-Day Authentic Alaska

So, if you’ve ever dreamt of seeing the northern lights while sailing through the pristine waters of Alaska, read on to discover the incredible opportunities that await. Next on our list was to finally spend some time in the thermal suite beyond just taking photos and videos of it. We spent just under 1.5 hours here, alternating between the heated loungers and the experiences. My personal favorite is the salt room, while Don enjoys the sauna.

Do You Need a Passport for Alaska Cruise?

This cabin looked in really good shape still considering the ship is a few years old now. It had modern décor and was a pretty standard size and layout when it comes to balcony cabins. Feeling a bit tired from all our recent travels, we didn’t do much in Seattle this time around.

alaskan cruise norwegian

But what truly simplified our transition was Seattle’s Port Valet Service. This service lets you check in and send your luggage directly from the ship to your flight, making the process as seamless as possible. After this nature-filled morning, we explored downtown Ketchikan.

One of the nice things about Norwegian Encore, when compared to our recent Princess cruise, was the abundance of spaces to glacier view. Following this set, we ended our evening in the Sugarcane Mojito Bar with some drinks and live Latin music. Tomorrow were were cruising through Glacier Bay early in the morning, and we certainly did not want to miss it.

Again, we highly recommend making reservations pre-cruise for these venues as popular restaurants and dining times fill up quickly. For those wanting to truly experience Alaska, its offers up to 14 day sailings with plenty of port visits and scenic cruising. This ship has a variety of sailings, from a couple of different departure points, in addition to land-based tours for those wanting a more in-depth Alaskan experience. This section of our Alaska cruise review provides a detailed day-by-day itinerary breakdown.

Aerial view of Glacier Bay

A comprehensive Alaska Denali program in only six days, complete with riverboat and railroad experiences as well as a preview of Denali’s incredible wilderness. Embarking on a 10-day Alaskan cruise also presents an opportunity to witness the dynamic range of wildlife in the region. From spotting humpback whales breaching the oceans surface to observing brown bears catching salmon in pristine rivers, the possibilities for wildlife encounters are endless. Additionally, the chance to engage with indigenous cultures and learn about their rich heritage adds a fascinating cultural aspect to this Alaskan adventure.

I spent $20 at NCL's Ice Bar, and it was the best-kept secret on Epic

For Glacier Bay National Park, the ship onboarded National Park Rangers to give narration about the area. They would point out any wildlife and information about how the area has changed over the years. (I will say, the prices do tend to be slightly higher if you book through the cruise line, than if you book through a third party).

That’s probably why it was always quite busy during our sailing. On our Norwegian Encore cruise, we had a 7-night dining package, so we were able to sample most of the specialty restaurants. Located on Deck 7, this 24-hour pub serves a changing menu depending on the time of day. This large venue features a bar, along with a mix of high tops and restaurant-style seats.

In summary, Sitka is a treasure trove of experiences, from its historical landmarks to culinary delights and shopping options. Despite the extra time needed for tendering, the day was rich in Alaskan culture and natural beauty. While our Norwegian Encore cruise ship balcony was smaller than some other balconies in the industry, we highly recommend a balcony cabin especially in Alaska. The king-sized bed was located on the aft wall facing forward adjacent to the balcony, which is our preferred cabin orientation. This bed provided plenty of comfort after our long days and nights exploring all that Alaska and Norwegian Encore have to offer. The bigger the table, the better, as cruisers are entitled to 4 selections each when redeeming a specialty dining credit.

If you’re considering an Alaska cruise, we wholeheartedly recommend Norwegian Cruise Line for its mid-sized ships and affordable pricing. And if you’re short on time, our guide to picking the perfect 7-day itinerary will help you make the most of your trip. Embarking on a 10-day Alaska Inside Passage cruise aboard the Norwegian Sun was an adventure we’ll never forget. From the awe-inspiring landscapes of Juneau and Skagway to the cultural richness of Sitka and Ketchikan, each port of call offered something unique. Icy Strait Point was a standout, offering a less crowded experience and incredible whale-watching opportunities. Our 10-day Alaska cruise aboard the Norwegian Sun was a memorable experience with a few hiccups.

Personally, we weren’t really that impressed with the Norwegian Cruise Line food. While there definitely was a nice variety of options, it just seemed like everything was mass-produced and lacked flavor. There is also the option to upgrade to the Premium Plus Drink Package which includes many higher-end liquors and wines for an additional $29 per day. So doing some light math, let’s say you start drinking in the early afternoon and have one drink per hour. Then you go to dinner and switch to wine, let’s say you have 2 glasses ($9 + $15).
